Canker sores, fever
blisters, herpes, and cold sores; what's the difference?
First of all, they are all ulcers,
painful and have the same root cause; negative emotions. Yes, there may be a
virus involved, but it is the negative emotion that causes the vulnerability to the virus and/or bacteria.
Actually,
the treatments for all are
very similar as well. If you use a canker sore treatment
for your mouth it almost always works with herpes simplex, fever
blisters and cold
sores as well. And, vice versa.
The canker sore remedies that we
point you to are based on
holistic
alternative medicine for the most part but we do realize that a
quick fix treatment can be tremendously helpful as well.
Not only do want want to find out how
to get rid of canker sores on
the tongue and throat; canker sores in the mouth
anywhere for that matter. And, we want to know how to prevent them
from occurring permanently, so we have
canker sores causes for you to
read about too.

What Causes Canker Sores? - Nurse's Guide
If you currently have a canker sore or a few in your mouth you may be wondering what causes canker sores in the mouth. Perhaps you have had these annoying red, inflamed sores many times before. Canker sores are also called aphthous ulcers in the medical field, but I'll keep this simple.
A canker sore is a painful open sore in the mouth. It can be yellow or white and is usually surrounded by an inflamed reddened area. A canker sore is never a malignant (cancerous) sore. It is benign, meaning it is not cancer. It is also not a herpes sore (herpes simplex).
For some reason they seem to happen in females or women more than they do in males or men. It doesn't matter how old you are you can get them at any age. They often crop up when kids are in elementary school.
You can find canker sores on the inside of the cheeks, on the inside of the lips, on the palate and tongue and at the bottom of the gums.
It's well known that canker sores can run in families. One of the reasons for this is because whatever is causing this ulcer may have some genetic cause or reason. I've found that people who have gluten intolerance and/or have celiac disease have canker sores until they stop eating gluten. This could be one genetic connection, since celiac disease is genetic and passed on in the genes although the genes still need to be triggered by something unknown. One can carry the gene but not have full-blown celiac disease yet or ever.
Some experts think it's associated with the body's immune system. Here again it could also relate back to celiac disease because gluten flattens the villi in the small intestine and nutrients can't be absorbed so the immune system suffers and its defenses are broken down. So nutritional deficiencies could play a part.
Even if one doesn't have celiac disease or is not gluten intolerant, they may be eating a bad diet. The standard American diet is lacking in a lot of good phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals and we don't know what we're missing that could cause canker sores. It's thought that deficiencies in iron, folic acid, or Vitamin B-12 could play a part in developing canker sores.
The canker sores often crop up after a mouth injury due to dental work, getting braces doing aggressive tooth cleaning, or biting of the tongue or cheek.
Canker sores can also appear during emotional stress, during menstrual periods and when there are hormonal changes. Food allergies could play a part too. Then there is exposure in the mouth to various chemicals, irritating the sensitive tissues.
These are the most common causes of canker sores but there are many causes. There is much you can do to get rid of canker sores and stop them from ever appearing with the right treatments and remedies. There are many ways to get to the cause and find the best natural cure for canker sores.

These are some question and answers on
canker sores.

Could anyone help explain the difference between them. I know that a cold sore is a type of herpes so one of my questions is can anyone get cold sores at any age even if you have not had sex?
I have dipped a total of 9 times over a 2 month span, and each time i took tiny pinches and took them out after 5 or ten minutes. After I had my last dip a week and a day ago 30 minutes after taking it out I got a small sore on the spot on my gum where I usually put it in. The sore hurt a bit the first two days but its been a week and it still hasnt gone away, even know there isnt any pain anymore. It appears to be a canker sore but im just not sure since it doesn't hurt. I know im probably just paranoid because ive barely had any dips, but im worried I might have mouth cancer. The sore isnt very white or red, it just kind of blends in with my gums. Thanks and by the way im done with dipping for good.
I got my lip pierced abouuuut four days ago(?) and Ive had lots of piercings, however, under this one, just below where the piercing stem is on the inside of my lip I have a canker sore -__-" Its really quite painful, and I've only ever had like ONE canker sore. What exactly are they? How are they caused? How can I get rid of it?
I heard that you are only supposed to get a few canker sores a year, but I have them more often than not! My mom asked me how many canker sores i HAVE had, and I asked her this year or this month! It is so frustrating, and painful! I have had mono for around a month (4 weeks, give or take), and I was wondering if the two could be related at all? Thanks! :)
Moved into a new apartment. Day after I got what I think is a canker sore on my tongue or I bite it in my sleep. Next day I found a white bump on my vulva, figured it was an ingrown hair I get that frequently. Today I noticed its kinda painfuls down there. I looked at the bump nothing changed... Tonight I look further down. 3 white patches together at entrance of vagina and the area is very swollen. I'm freaking out this never happened. I haven't had sex in a year n a half. My boyfriend of 6 years passed away In February. I came down with a stomach virus and recieved a pelvic exam and std test everything came back normal... I looked at pictures of herpes I don't think it's what I have if u can get it from non sexual contact... Kinda looked like thrush. The "canker sores" in my mouth look like what I have down there... I'm in tears because I'm stressed and praying I can get into the doctor tmrw.. I saw ppl w hypothyrodism can get thrush easily. Had it for a few years. Started taking meds again after about a year but my dosage isn't correct I think (just had blood work) I've had my face break out also which is a symptom... I've been having pelvic pressure n slight pain in my right ovary (have issues w this ovary) n urinating frequently. Please has someone had these spots down there and I'm their mouth before? Hoping to get to a dr tmrw. Thanks
I have a sore throat, been going on for a few days. Not necessarily painful cept for when swallowing, even then its by a small bit. But it's generally just annoying and my throat feels congested, so I took a look with a flashlight to see what it looked like. Found a small canker sore on my tongue but nothing major there. No spots or anything, I looked at my palate and tonsils and found no spots anywhere at all. My uvula is not red at all. My tonsils are just normal pink as well. Overall, my mouth looks fine save for a tongue with a grimy overcast. Only symptoms are. Spitting up Congested throat (I can breath fine.) Slight pain while swallowing but nothing to cry or moan over. Discolored mucus- but not much of it. --- Other than those annoyances, I can function just fine, no fatigue, no fever, none of that stuff. :P Should I see a doc or just wait for this to pass? Stupid spam bots. :P
I was diagnosed with mono this past December. I had lasting side effects for about 3 months or so. However, I am still getting canker sores (one or two) every month. I never used to get them before I had mono. Is anyone else experiencing this same type of thing? I know I can't do much about canker sores, I was just wondering if other people have experienced this and how long it might last. Thanks!
The other day I had my mouth open and got scrathed in the mouth. Yesterday I noticed I have a bump above my tooth next to my front tooth. I put my fingert on it and It and it's a sharp pain. It only hurts when I touch it. Also There is a white spot. Could It be a canker sore? Please help. I makes me wonder because there is a bump on the tooth and the sore on the bump. Thanks.
I have a white blister type thing on my upper gum. Its not on the cheek or lip, its on the gum itself. It doesn't pop out or anything, it is just painful to touch with my tongue. My friend said it's a canker sore, but i'm a little scared of what it is... I brush my teeth every morning
it wont work. canker sore gel wont work and the gel really hurts and stings bad!! how do i get rid of it. please help because i have to have hot wings for dinner and i dont want my canker sore to hurt.
It all started Friday when I woke up was fixing my hair and noticed my left lymph node was swollen quite a lot... I sort of freaked me out cause I honestly felt perfectly fine and I have never had that happen before so I ignored it and went on with my daily routine. Later in the day I started to notice my left back wisdom tooth( which has caused me pain in the past) started hurting AGAIN after not hurting for about six whole months. I started to touch it and mess with it which I know isn't the smartest thing to do and of course it was foul smelling just like it had been six month prior which is originally why I even noticed that it was growing in. Anyway I start to do my research Friday night and find out that the two can defiantly be related (lymph node and wisdom tooth pain) So I just figured I'd make an appointment for monday no big deal. Well, turns out I was wrong... I woke up saturday and found myself in a hell of a lot more pain sort of a constant aching you could say. I kept popping advil and the pain would subside I could talk and chew it was the MOST comfortable but I was fine. Sunday I wake up in time to go to work in the morning and the left side of my throat is extremely sore!!! My jaw hurts and I even have a canker sore on the left side of the tip of my tongue. Anyway still same symptoms and luckily monday I get an appointment for the dentist. I tell him of my pain and he takes an Xray and to my surprise says my wisdom tooth is growing in straight and I'm just going through teething but that I had some food stuck under the flap of my tooth probably causing more discomfort and he gave me penicillin and ibuprofen. Anyway, symptoms grow worse and more extreme nothing changes though...I have no fever, no headache, just EXTREMELY awful pain in my mouth. I called the dentist for something strong he gives me codeine which I can take once every six hours which is awful since it takes about a half an hour to start working and only lasts for about 3 hours and even then there is STILL always a slight pain. The dentist said if the swelling gets bigger to go to the hospital but honestly there is so much pain in my mouth I can't really tell. Today my symptoms include a extreme sore throat only on left side by the tooth, more cankers sores ONLY on left side by the tooth, my cheek and tongue are starting to swell, and of course that AWFUL tooth pain. After hours looking on the internet for solutions I grew frustrated and made a doctors appointment. Also, I had been doing salt water rinses( I know everyone will disagree but I feel like it caused the canker sores) taking my meds when I am suppose to but no improvement it only gets worse. I can't talk eat or chew I'm really worried about going to the doctors thinking she might not have anything to help me out which is my greatest fear. I noticed that the only type of people who have similar symptoms are people with dry sockets only my tooth is still there. Hell, the dentist said I could even just let it grow in... No way! There has to be something wrong here... There is no way EVERYONE goes through this much pain! The tooth hasn't even been taken out for crying out loud! I'm just worried about school and work I haven't been to school all week the pain is that extreme that all I try to do is sleep and I feel sort of weak since I can't really eat (only soup) and feel extremely sluggish. I at least want to get a doctors note for work tomorrow I can barely even speak and it hurts to much to! It hurts to just sit here! Anyone with similar symptoms or problems? I can't seem to find anyone with their wisdom tooth still there that has the same problems!
I have had three really tiny canker sores in my mouth where my lips and gums would meet for the last 5 days. How much longer untill they go away or what could I use to heal them faster?
Canker sores for an infant
Does crest cavity protecting toothpaste have sls in it? I have braces and when I got them I switched from Colgate to crest and now I have some cancker sores in my mouth now. Is it the toothpaste or something else and can I use something else if that's the problem? Can u write a list of toothpastes I can use for braces?
Usually i get about 3-4 canker sores a month and they can last about a week to two weeks for me. Theyre not due to my braces because sometimes theyre under my tounge. I regularly brush my teeth and keep a good maitnence. Why do i get so many canker sores, and what can i do to get rid and prevent them?? And no i dont go around kissing everyone. I dont kiss people. Thank you
